Kybella is an FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment for reducing the submental fat that frequently forms underneath the chin. Before Kybella was introduced, the only practical methods of fat reduction in this area were surgical, involving anesthesia, incisions and a recovery period. Kybella is administered via injection to the targeted area, and does away with the commitment required for surgery without compromising results in the right patients. Kybella has also proven effective in treating stubborn pockets of fat on other parts of the body, including the droopy jowls, underarm fat and bra bulges. Wherever you have Kybella, you can enjoy permanent results as Kybella destroys fat cells which your body will not regenerate.

What is Kybella?

The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in your body. Deoxycholic acid is responsible for helping the body absorb fats in the intestines. When it is directly injected into pockets of unwanted fat in the body, Kybella destroys the targeted fat cells. These cells are then naturally expelled by the body’s circulatory and lymphatic systems. The average adult person has a finite number of fat cells. Once eliminated, they do not return, which means that with the maintenance of a stable and healthy weight, the results of your treatment will be permanent.

Kybella tends to work best on patients with good skin elasticity and not a significant amount of loose skin along the jawline. CoolSculpting is an alternative non-surgical option for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity, but if skin laxity is severe, a surgical procedure will still likely be needed to produce the best results. Dr. Lickstein does offer surgical neck lifts for this purpose and can advise you on which treatment will provide you with the most attractive outcome.

What if I have stubborn fat in other areas?

Unfortunately, many individuals struggle with stubborn pockets of fat in other areas besides the submental area as well. Other common areas of concern include the jowls, the bra roll, the abdomen and the underarm regions. While currently only FDA cleared for the treatment of submental fat, Kybella can also be used to successfully treat these additional areas, and Dr. Lickstein has developed expertise using Kybella to treat regions beyond the chin, achieving lasting results for his patients.

While the number of treatments and the amount of Kybella needed will vary depending on the size of the treatment area, the severity of your symptoms, and the results desired, in most cases your Kybella treatment in these areas will closely resemble the course of treatment for submental fat, and your results will also be permanent just as they would be in the submental area. A comprehensive Kybella treatment plan can be designed to improve both submental and others areas of concern for maximum results.

The Submental Fat Issue

Submental fat often forms beneath the jawline due to aging rather than weight gain. Many people find the fat formation to be just as bothersome as the appearance of wrinkles. Submental fat can make you look heavier, even if you haven’t gained a pound. It is also impossible to remove through diet and exercise in most cases.

Benefits of Kybella

Kybella offers multiple advantages in reducing submental fat without surgery:

  • Can improve the chin area and other areas where you have stubborn fat
  • No incisions to leave visible scarring afterward
  • No anesthesia or anesthesia-related risks
  • Deoxycholic acid is a substance produced by the body
  • Injections can be performed right in our office
  • No significant downtime after the procedure
  • Results are long-lasting once they are achieved

Non-Surgical Procedure, Permanent Results

Dr. Lickstein begins his Kybella procedures by marking a grid pattern on the area to the treated, to indicate where the injections will be placed. We will apply a local anesthetic before your treatment to ensure your comfort throughout. Dr. Lickstein will administer many tiny injections – often between 30 and 50 – to produce a smooth and natural-looking result. It should take no more than one hour to complete your procedure.

You will be able to return to activities immediately following your Kybella treatment. Since it is common to experience some swelling and soreness in the treatment area for a few days, we advise patients to apply ice to the area as needed to help manage these side effects. Over-the-counter pain medication may also be used as needed. The discomfort associated with treatment should not be significant enough to keep you from most of your daily tasks.

At least two Kybella treatments are often necessary for the best possible results. Patients with more significant amounts of submental fat may require additional treatments. Once those results become apparent, they should be long-lasting since the destroyed fat cells will not return. While some patients may see results immediately, most patients will see their results develop in the weeks after their final treatment, with their final results appearing after about three months.

You can expect similar results if you use Kybella to treat concerns outside of the submental area, with two sessions generally required as an initial course of treatment and with results appearing about three months after your final treatment. As with the treatment of the submental area, your Kybella results will be permanent since Kybella destroys fat cells wherever you have the treatment.
