How Does Laser Resurfacing Work?

Laser skin resurfacing works by precisely removing the top layers of skin using laser energy that safely vaporizes it layer by layer. By removing the epidermis, or the outer layer, and heating the dermis, or the underlying layer, laser skin resurfacing effectively stimulates the growth of healthy new collagen achieving firmer, smoother skin that has a radiant glow.

Superficial Resurfacing

This treatment removes a very thin layer of skin to improve fine lines, pigmentation, tone and texture, restoring a more youthful appearance. This treatment has as little as one day of downtime, and is beneficial for overall skin maintenance.

Deep Resurfacing

Deeper facial resurfacing treatments remove fine lines and soften deep wrinkles. Areas frequently targeted include lines around the eyes and the mouth. Treatments are customized according to your goals and downtime varies according to the depth of the laser.

Laser Resurfacing FAQs

icon q

What areas can be treated with laser skin resurfacing?

The most commonly treated areas are the face and neck. Other areas, such as the hands and chest, can also be treated. Resurfacing treatments can be combined with other plastic surgery procedures to further improve the results.

icon q

What will the procedure be like?

Your skin will be cleansed. Depending on the patient, a topical anesthetic may be applied or a nerve block may be administered. Your eyes will be protected during the treatment and the laser will glide across the skin of the area to be treated. The procedure typically lasts about 30 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas being treated.

icon q

Is it painful?

The comfort level during laser skin treatment varies greatly from patient to patient. It also depends on the depth of the treatment. For deeper treatments, local anesthetic is used in addition to the topical anesthetic. Immediately following the treatment you may experience redness and sensation similar to a sunburn. Swelling may occur.

Does laser skin resurfacing require a recovery period?

Complete healing will depend on the depth of the treatment. Shallow treatments may be healed in 2 to 4 days, while deeper treatments may take several weeks. You will be giving instructions regarding skin care but should be able to begin wearing makeup in approximately one week.
