Botox® is an injectable, a non-surgical anti-aging treatment that smoothes fine lines and wrinkles, giving patients a more youthful appearance and preventing the further development of these aging signs. Botox® is given through a series of injections that deliver a prescription medication — called a “neuromodulator” — into facial muscles. The neuromodulator causes these muscles to relax, minimizing and, in many cases, eliminating these dynamic wrinkles since they are produced primarily by the contraction of these muscles.

Dr. Lickstein performs Botox® injections in his office, either as a single procedure or in combination with other anti-aging treatments, to help all his patients achieve their precise facial rejuvenation goals. A Botox® injection is an effective treatment on its own. However, if patients desire more facial or body rejuvenation, Botox® can form one part of a more comprehensive treatment plan so that patients can get the maximum rejuvenation possible. Further, Botox®’s convenience makes it an ideal procedure to reverse aging signs, and follow-up treatments to maintain your results can easily fit into the busiest and most demanding schedules.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a prescription formulation that has been used for decades for both medical and cosmetic purposes. The formulation features minuscule amounts of botulinum toxin, a neuromodulator, which can beneficially affect the muscles of the face and body. The substance serves as a type of muscle relaxant, arresting the muscles which cause dynamic wrinkles to occur and preventing these aging signs from progressing. This neuromodulator has long-lasting results and may also be used to reduce pain; however, it’s primary use is to alleviate muscle tightening and wrinkle formation caused by the contractions of specific facial muscles.

Botox® has been beneficial in treating a variety of challenging medical conditions during its history of use, including blepharospasm and cervical dystonia. Today, it is also used for chronic migraines and some types of urinary incontinence. Botox® also has another key use. Injections of Botox® into the palms is known to relieve excess perspiration, and for this purpose, it has also been proven to be a safe and effective treatment shown to have long-lasting results. As a cosmetic treatment, Botox® is highly effective in reducing wrinkles in the upper portion of the face, with FDA approval for the treatment of frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.

Dynamic vs. Static Wrinkles

Botox® works on lines and creases that are categorized as dynamic wrinkles because they appear when you make certain facial expressions. For example, you will likely see lines form between the eyebrows when you squint or frown. Dynamic wrinkles also frequently appear across the forehead as deep horizontal creases or fanning out in subtle lines from the outer corners of the eye, which you likely know as crow’s feet.

Other wrinkles that appear on the face, such as those that form around the nose and mouth, tend to be caused by collagen loss in the underlying dermal structure. These lines are known as static wrinkles because they are visible all the time. Botox® does not work on these lines caused by volume loss in the deeper dermal structures of the face, but Dr. Lickstein offers a variety of dermal fillers that are effective in restoring support and smoothing away these telltale signs of aging from the inside out.

A comprehensive treatment plan to address all aspects of facial aging commonly pairs Botox® with a wrinkle filler to specifically address each of the aging symptoms present in the face. Our non-surgical Lickstein Lift goes one step further, by also addressing the surface texture of the skin. Consistent use of non-surgical solutions can help many patients avoid more invasive procedures such as a facelift or brow lift. While patients will need on-going Botox® treatments to maintain their results, regular Botox® use can lead to less dynamic lines as muscles are “trained” to relax. Botox® provides a safe and effective alternative to more invasive procedures and allows patients to avoid surgical procedures while still maintaining a youthful look.

Dr. Lickstein and his staff are happy to discuss the advantages of Botox® with you during your consultation and help you determine if this treatment is the right choice for you. If you are contraindicated for a Botox® treatment, Dr. Lickstein can discuss some of the many alternatives to Botox® with you that would still get you the results you want.

Can anyone have a Botox® procedure?

While many patients will qualify to receive a Botox® procedure, the treatment does have several contraindications which may mean you will need to consider other options to remedy your fine lines and wrinkles. If you have previously or currently suffer from any of the following issues, Botox® might not be right for you. These issues include Lou Gehrig’s Disease; peripheral nerve disorder; myasthenia gravis (an autoimmune muscle condition); double vision or blurred vision; general, pre-existing difficulty breathing or swallowing; or bladder control issues.

Botox® side effects are relatively rare. If for any of these reasons you cannot have Botox®, Dr. Lickstein will work with you to find the right treatment for your aging signs and will do everything possible to help improve your concern areas. Some options available to you in this instance could include dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm, or laser treatments, such as Halo, which can help reduce and minimize wrinkles and restart your skin’s natural collagen production, leading to long-lasting and natural rejuvenation.

Treatment Areas

While highly effective, Botox® is best suited to the treatment of specific areas of the face and, in some cases, the palms of the hands. As an anti-aging treatment, Botox® is primarily used to address aging signs in the following areas:

  • Forehead wrinkles, forehead lines
  • Parallel lines between the eyebrows, also known as frown lines or the 11s
  • Horizontal lines across the bridge of the nose also called bunny lines
  • Crow’s feet in the outer corners of the eyes
  • A brow line that is beginning to drop in some areas

Ask Dr. Lickstein for Botox® before and after photos during your consultation to gauge the potential results of Botox® for symptoms similar to yours.

Dr. Lickstein and his team will assess your concern areas to determine whether Botox® will provide you with the best possible results. If Botox® is not the right procedure for you — for example, your primary concern is skin laxity in the neck or submental area — Dr. Lickstein will recommend appropriate alternatives which he can provide at his office.

For example, substantial improvements to skin laxity and excess fat in the submental area can be achieved through the use of Kybella, which Dr. Lickstein offers. Dr. Lickstein is committed to providing a wide range of cosmetic rejuvenation options to help his patients improve many concern areas and address their personal aesthetic goals.

What can I expect on the day of my procedure?

In addition to being a very fast procedure, a Botox® treatment is also a very easy procedure to have. In fact, you will not need to take any special steps before having your Botox® procedure. On the day of your appointment, Dr. Lickstein will seat you comfortable in the procedure room and cleanse all areas where you will receive the Botox® injections.Depending on the injection sites and your general level of sensitivity, you may have topical anesthetic administered to you to make the treatment more comfortable. Anesthesia is optional if for any reason you do not wish to be numbed during your procedure. Most patients choose not to have anesthesia and remain very comfortable throughout their Botox® treatment.

The Botox® injections themselves also take very little time to perform. Using a thin needle, Dr. Lickstein will inject precisely predetermined amounts of the neuromodulator into the muscles surrounding your concern areas. The number of injections you will require entirely depends on the existing condition of your skin and the amount of rejuvenation you wish to see.

After your injections, you may leave Dr. Lickstein’s office and immediately return to your normal activities, and you will have no special instructions to follow post-treatment. You may experience some mild swelling or bruising around the injection sites, but these side effects typically subside within a matter of hours.

What results can I expect after Botox®?

You may see results immediately following your Botox® injections. However, for most patients, results will usually develop in the days which follow your procedure. The outcome of your Botox® procedure should become fully visible within about a week after your treatment. Your refreshed, more youthful appearance, however, will continue to develop for three to four more months. It will be necessary to schedule periodic follow-ups to receive more Botox® injections to maintain your results. If you continue to follow the Botox® regimen recommended by Dr. Lickstein, you should be able to enjoy long-lasting results without the need for more invasive procedures. The benefits of a Botox® treatment often far outweigh Botox® cost.

Botox® Can Effectively and Decisively Correct the Fine Lines of Aging

Fine lines and wrinkles on the face usually appear as the first signs of aging. Luckily, however, they can be easily dealt with by a variety of safe, effective cosmetic procedures on the market today, and many of these procedures offer numerous benefits with minimal risks and allow you to avoid more invasive procedures for a significant amount of time. Among the oldest and most reliable of these procedures — developed in the 1940s and still very much in use today — is Botox®.Because your doctor can administer precise amounts of this neuromodulator by injection, you can count on having just enough rejuvenation to improve your concern areas without more augmentation than you need. This helps ensure you never have a “frozen” look or look overdone. Dr. Lickstein firmly believes in treatments that highlight and enhance the naturally attractive and unique facial features of his patients.

Also, Botox® injections are a procedure that your doctor can perform quickly in his office and with relatively little pain. Further, Botox® requires no lengthy downtime or maintenance and has no recovery period. These factors make Botox® one of the most patient-friendly rejuvenation treatments that one can have.

If you do not have other, significant signs of aging in or around your face area, or you simply want to hold off on having a more invasive procedure, Botox® can give you the great results you want until you decide you need a more substantive procedure. In fact, it is quite possible that with a Botox® treatment, facial fillers and regular follow-ups, you can avoid much more invasive procedures almost indefinitely.

Additionally, Botox® is ideal to combine with other facial rejuvenation procedures, making it a treatment one must consider even if you have already elected to have other types of facial rejuvenation, for example, with dermal fillers or even in conjunction with a neck lift. Dr. Lickstein can share with you the benefits of having concurrent treatments with your Botox® treatment, which can enhance the results of Botox® and substantially add to your facial rejuvenation.
