Botox® is a nonsurgical anti-aging treatment that smooth fine lines and wrinkles, giving patients a more youthful appearance. The procedure is performed using a series of injections that deliver a prescription medication — often called a “neuromodulator” — into facial muscles, relaxing these muscles and eliminating the wrinkles that form when these muscles contract. Dr. Lickstein performs Botox injections in his office, either as a single procedure or in combination with other anti-aging treatments, to help all his patients achieve their precise facial rejuvenation goals.

What is Botox?

Botox is a prescription formulation that has been used for decades for both medical and cosmetic purposes. The formulation features minuscule amounts of botulinum toxin, a neuromodulator, which can beneficially affect the muscles of the face and body. The substance serves as a type of muscle relaxant with long-lasting results and may be used to reduce pain, muscle tightening and wrinkle formation caused by contractions of specific facial muscles.

Botox has been beneficial in treating a variety of challenging medical conditions during its history of use, including blepharospasm and cervical dystonia. Today, it is also used for chronic migraines, excessive sweating and some types of urinary incontinence. As a cosmetic treatment, Botox is effective in reducing wrinkles in the upper portion of the face.

Dynamic vs. Static Wrinkles

Botox works on lines and creases that are categorized as dynamic wrinkles because they appear when you make some facial expressions. For example, you will likely see lines form between the eyebrows when you squint or frown. Dynamic wrinkles also frequently appear across the forehead as deep horizontal creases or fanning out in subtle lines from the outer corners of the eye, which you likely know as “crow’s feet.”

Other wrinkles that appear on the face, such as those that form around the nose and mouth, tend to be caused by collagen loss in the underlying dermal structure. These lines are known as static wrinkles because they are visible all the time. Botox does not work on these lines, but Dr. Lickstein offers a variety of dermal fillers that are effective in restoring support to the dermal structure and smoothing away these telltale signs of aging from the inside out.

Benefits of Botox

Anti-Wrinkle Injections offer numerous advantages over other types of anti-aging treatments for the right patients:

  • The procedure is quick and relatively painless
  • Treatment can be customized to the precise needs of each patient
  • The medication has a long track record of safety and efficacy
  • There is no downtime after the procedure
  • Results appear within days and last for three to four months

Dr. Lickstein and his staff are happy to discuss the advantages of Botox with you at your consultation and help you determine if this treatment is the right choice for you.

Can anyone have a Botox procedure?

While many patients will qualify to receive a Botox procedure, the treatment does have several contraindications which may mean you will need to consider other options to remedy your fine lines and wrinkles. If you have previously or currently suffer from any of the following issues, Botox might not be right for you. These issues include: Lou Gehrig’s Disease; peripheral nerve disorder; myasthenia gravis (an autoimmune muscle condition); double vision or blurred vision; general, pre-existing difficulty breathing or swallowing; or bladder control issues. If for any of these reasons you cannot have Botox, Dr. Lickstein will work with you to find the right treatment for your aging signs and will do everything possible to help improve your concern areas.

Treatment Areas

Botox is primarily used to address the following areas of aging:

  • Horizontal lines across the forehead
  • Parallel lines between the eyebrows, also known as frown lines or the 11s
  • Horizontal lines across the bridge of the nose also called bunny lines
  • Crow’s feet in the outer corners of the eyes
  • A brow line that is beginning to drop in some areas

Dr. Lickstein and his team will assess your concerns to determine whether Botox will provide you with the best possible results. If Botox is not the right procedure for you, Dr. Lickstein can discuss the alternatives available at his office to help his patients achieve a wide range of aesthetic goals.

What can I expect on the day of my procedure?

You will not need to take any special steps before having your Botox procedure. On the day of your appointment, Dr. Lickstein will seat you comfortable in the procedure room and cleanse all areas where you will receive the Botox injections. Depending on the injection sites and your general level of sensitivity, you may have topical anesthetic administered to you to make the treatment more comfortable. Anesthesia is optional if for any reason you do not wish to be numbed during your procedure.

The Botox injections themselves take very little time to perform. Using a thin needle, Dr. Lickstein will inject precisely predetermined amounts of the neuromodulator into the muscles surrounding your concern areas. The number of injections you will require completely depends on the existing condition of your skin and the amount of rejuvenation you wish to see.

After your injections, you may leave our office and immediately return to your normal activities, and you will have no special instructions to follow. You may experience some mild swelling or bruising around the injection sites, but these side effects typically subside within a matter of hours.

What results can I expect after Botox?

You may see results immediately following your Botox injections. However, your results will usually develop in the several days following your procedure, and the full outcome of your Botox procedure should be fully visible within about a week. Your refreshed, more youthful appearance will continue for three to four more months before you will need to schedule another Botox treatment to maintain your results.

Botox Can Effectively and Decisively Correct the Fine Lines of Aging

Fine lines and wrinkles on the face usually come as the first signs of aging. Luckily, however, they can be easily dealt with by a variety of safe, effective cosmetic procedures on the market today, and many of these procedures offer numerous benefits with minimal risks. Among the oldest of these procedures — developed in the 1940s — and the most reliable is Botox.

Because your doctor can administer precise amounts of this neuromodulator by injection, you can count on having just enough rejuvenation to improve your concern areas without more augmentation than you need. Dr. Lickstein firmly believes in treatment that does not look “overdone.” Also, this is a procedure that your doctor can perform quickly and relatively painlessly. Botox requires no lengthy downtime or maintenance and has no recovery period at all.

If you do not have other, major signs of aging in or around your face area, or you simply want to hold off on having a more invasive procedure, Botox can give you the great results you want until you decide you need a more substantive procedure. Additionally, it works well with other procedures, making it ideal to combine with treatments for other facial concerns at the same time, for example, in conjunction with a neck lift.
