Gummy Bears

Implants have evolved through numerous styles and design changes since the advent of breast augmentation. Physicians in the early twentieth century experimented with a variety of bizarre materials and methods to enhance the breasts, until, in the 1960s, the first commercially manufactured silicone implants were introduced. Saline implants followed shortly after. Over half a century later, silicone implants and saline implants are still the most well-known options for breast augmentation.

They are not, however, the only options. The mid-2000s saw cohesive gel implants enter the US market after an initial release in Europe. These implants, popularly known as gummy bear implants, feature a dense silicone gel filling designed to maintain the implant’s shape over a longer lifetime while reducing common risks such as shifting, folding, rippling, collapsing or leaking. Gummy bear implants take their nickname from this form-stable filling, which is often described as being similar in texture to gummy bear candies.

The choice of implant type is one of many decisions that must be made in the lead-up to breast augmentation with Lickstein Plastic Surgery. To ensure you make an informed decision, learn more about gummy bear implants below and schedule a consultation to discuss your options with Dr. Lickstein.

Gummy Bear Implants Overview

Gummy bear implants feature a silicone outer shell with a thick silicone gel filling formed by increasing the number of cross-links between the gel molecules. This additional cross-linking creates a more stable implant that retains its shape even when cut in half — again, much like a gummy bear candy — but remains soft to the touch.

Like other types of implant, which may be either round or anatomical (teardrop) and have a smooth or textured surface, gummy bear implants also may have an anatomical shape or round shape with a smooth or textured surface. These styles allow women to select their preferred look and, when shaped implants are selected, offer natural-looking projection at the bottom with tapering at the top. Because they are not symmetrical, it’s important that anatomical implants maintain correct orientation and do not rotate. A textured surface on the outer shell can help the implant stay in place. Anatomical implants tend to be slightly firmer, may be easier to see and feel, and require a longer incision than round implants.

How Do Gummy Bear Implants Compare To Saline And Silicone?

As with any option for breast augmentation, there are pros and cons to choosing gummy bear implants. Those who opt for gummy bear implants often cite their natural shape and durability as the reasoning for their choice. Thanks to their highly cohesive gel filling, gummy bear implants are less likely to change shape over time. They are less likely to collapse or fold, which produces a visible rippling effect in the breast, and less likely to rupture or leak. Their anatomical shape may be preferable for women seeking natural-looking results rather than the more enhanced “Baywatch” look. Gummy bear implants may also reduce the risk of capsular contracture.

On the other hand, women who want more volume and projection overall may prefer the look of a round implant, and breast augmentation with gummy bear implants can also offer women these opportunities for personalization. The firm gel that allows gummy bear implants to hold their shape can make them feel less natural for some patients and can diminish their ability to move in the same manner as natural breasts, however.

Are Gummy Bear Implants Safe?

Gummy bear implants are a newer addition to the breast augmentation landscape. Though they have had fewer years to prove their safety and efficacy, they are FDA-approved and considered a safe alternative to silicone or saline implants.

Breast implant rupture or leaking is a concern with any type of implant. Cohesive silicone gel implants tend to leak less frequently because they generally do not develop the creasing that can strain the outer shell and cause a rupture. It is not impossible for a gummy bear implant to rupture, however, and if a leak does occur, it may be harder to detect than a saline implant leak.

If a gummy bear implant shifts out of place, additional surgery will be required to correct the implant. Regular screenings with your doctor are essential regardless of which type of implant you choose.

Any surgical procedure can have risks. Potential complications of breast augmentation include pain, poor scarring, changes in sensation, asymmetry, capsular contracture, bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation and need for revision surgery. Breast implants are designed to be long lasting and safe, but they are not intended to be lifetime devices. All breast augmentation patients should undergo the procedure knowing that additional surgery to replace or remove their implants is a likely reality for the future.

Who Are Gummy Bear Implants For?

A good candidate for gummy bear implants must first be a candidate for breast augmentation in general. You are a good candidate for breast augmentation if:

  • You are generally healthy
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Your breasts are fully developed
  • You are dissatisfied with the current shape or size of your breasts
  • You are old enough to legally undergo the procedure
  • You understand the risks and benefits of surgery
  • You are committed to attending follow-up appointments and adhering to instructions for recovery
  • You have realistic expectations

Gummy bear implants are FDA-approved for women age 22 and over. They may be an appealing option for women who are concerned about the longevity of their implants and the risk of rupture. When anatomical implants are selected, they may also be a good option for women who wish to achieve results that more closely resemble the shape of the natural breast, rather than the extreme shape than can result from round implants.
