What Are Gummy Bear Implants?

At Lickstein Plastic Surgery1 in Palm Beach Gardens, our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Lickstein has extensive experience with a range of breast implants, including cohesive gel implants, commonly known as gummy bear implants. Gummy bear implants are made of silicone based cohesive gel and they take their nickname from this form-stable filling, which is often described as being similar in texture to gummy bear candies. These implants feature a dense silicone gel filling designed to maintain the implant’s shape over a longer lifetime while reducing common risks such as shifting, folding, rippling, collapsing or leaking.

The choice of implant type is one of many decisions that must be made in the lead-up to breast augmentation surgery. Making an informed decision will help ensure you are pleased with your results. Gummy Bear Implants Overview

Gummy bear implants feature a silicone outer shell with a thick silicone gel filling formed by increasing the number of cross-links between the gel molecules. This additional cross-linking creates a more stable implant that retains its shape even when cut in half while remaining soft to the touch (like the namesake candy.) Gummy bear implants are round, with a smooth outer shell. Learn more about choosing the breast implants that are right for you.

The History of Breast Implants

Breast implants have evolved through numerous styles and design changes since the advent of breast augmentation. Physicians in the early twentieth century experimented with a variety of bizarre materials and methods to enhance the breasts, until, in the 1960s, the first commercially manufactured silicone implants were introduced. Saline implants followed shortly after. Over half a century later, silicone implants and saline implants are still the most well-known options for breast augmentation, but advancements have continued. The mid-2000s saw cohesive gel implants enter the US market after an initial release in Europe.

How Much Do Gummy Bear Implants Cost?

The cost of breast augmentation with gummy bear implants can vary depending on a number of factors, such as implant size and placement. Dr. Lickstein tailors every procedure to suit the needs and goals of each individual patient. Read a full overview of pricing considerations for breast augmentation.

How Do Gummy Bear Implants Compare To Saline And Silicone?

Choosing breast implants is a personal decision and there are several factors that will help you and your surgeon decide which type of implant is right for you. In general, patients who opt for gummy bear implants are seeking breast augmentation results that have a natural look, as opposed to a more enhanced “Baywatch” look.

Benefits of Gummy Bear Implants

Why do some patients choose a traditional silicone or saline implant over a gummy bear implant? There could be many reasons. One common concern is that the firm gel that allows gummy bear implants to hold their shape can make them feel less natural for some patients and can diminish their ability to move in the same manner as natural breasts.

Are Gummy Bear Implants Safe?

Gummy bear implants are a newer addition to the breast augmentation landscape. Though they have had fewer years to prove their safety and efficacy, they are FDA-approved and considered a safe alternative to silicone or saline implants.

Breast implant rupture or leaking is a concern with any type of implant. Gummy bear implants tend to leak less frequently because they generally do not develop the creasing that can strain the outer shell and cause a rupture. It is not impossible for a gummy bear implant to rupture, however, and if a leak does occur, it may be harder to detect than a saline implant leak.

If a gummy bear implant shifts out of place, additional surgery will be required to correct the implant. Regular screenings with your doctor are essential regardless of which type of implant you choose.

Breast Implant Risks

Any surgical procedure can have risks. Potential complications of breast augmentation include pain, poor scarring, changes in sensation, asymmetry, capsular contracture, bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation and the need for revision surgery. Breast implants are designed to be long lasting and safe, but they are not intended to be lifetime devices. All breast augmentation patients should undergo the procedure knowing that additional surgery to replace or remove their implants is a likely reality for the future.

How Do I Know if Gummy Bear Implants Are Right For Me?

A good candidate for gummy bear implants must first be a candidate for breast augmentation in general. You are a good candidate for breast augmentation if:

Gummy bear implants are FDA-approved for women age 22 and over. They may be an appealing option for women who are concerned about the longevity of their implants and the risk of rupture.
